Dear Reader:
Welcome to this month's edition of the Dover Math and Science Newsletter.
We'll begin with a review of some of our important new titles. You'll discover recently published works on symmetry, quantum mechanics, the Apollo expeditions, and more.
Next, we spotlight this month's theme: relativity and Einstein. One of the cornerstones of the Dover Math and Science publishing program was the 1952 reprint of Albert Einstein's The Principle of Relativity, and we're delighted to be able to showcase our books in this area.
Albert Einstein himself is fittingly one of our featured Dover authors in this issue along with the late Martin Gardner, who wrote many reader-friendly books that made the theory of relativity accessible to a wider audience. To those of us who have been associated with Dover for a long time, however, Martin was more than an author, albeit a remarkably popular and successful one. As a member of the small group of long-time advisors and consultants, which included NYU's Morris Kline in mathematics, Harvard's I. Bernard Cohen in the history of science, and MIT's J. P. Den Hartog in engineering, Martin's advice and editorial suggestions in the formative 1950s helped to define the Dover publishing program and give it the point of view which — despite many changes, new directions, and the consequences of evolution — continues to be operative today.
Also included is an exclusive interview with Dr. Ulf Leonhardt, co-author of one of our most intriguing new books, Geometry and Light: The Science of Invisibility, an original 2010 Dover publication. Plus, to end on a note of puzzlement and wonder, we'll include a look at our extraordinary logic and math puzzle-maker, Raymond Smullyan.
We hope you enjoy this month's edition of the Dover Math and Science Newsletter. And remember, we would love to hear from you. Perhaps you have an idea for a book you would like to see us publish? Have some feedback or just want to share a story with us? Feel free to talk to us!
Until next month,
John Grafton
